Ammonia Refrigeration
Refrigeration is an expanding field for various MTH products. The proficiency of MTH's regenerative turbine pumps in handling low vapor pressure refrigerants is a result of our extensive experience in the boiler feed and condensate return market. Notably, high-temperature water nearing its boiling point can exhibit vapor pressures equal to or lower than those found in ammonia refrigeration systems.
Currently, MTH is actively developing a brand-new iteration of our seal-less canned multistage regenerative turbine pumps, custom-tailored for ammonia refrigeration systems, serving as efficient "ammonia transfer pumps." This innovative solution obviates the need for expensive tanks, piping, compressors, and valving typically used to raise ammonia pressure in an "equalized pressure system." A critical advantage of our turbines in this context is their ability to minimize metal-to-metal contact. Unlike the York IT and Viking positive displacement pumps used previously, which suffered from significant wear rates due to their metal-to-metal contact, MTH regenerative turbine pumps, with their floating impeller design, offer an extended service life in an eco-friendly, seal-less configuration that complies with EPA and OSHA requirements.
Moreover, our seal-less turbines feature a reverse circulation line that consistently vents ammonia vapor buildup from the pump and motor during and between operational cycles. The SA50 Series' low Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) requirement makes both of these units exceptionally well-suited for pumping low vapor pressure fluids like ammonia, where an insufficient NPSH margin can lead to damaging cavitation. Both units provide entirely leak-free operation, a crucial requirement to meet governmental safety and environmental standards.
Design Features
• Low NPSH (Less than 2 Feet) • ANSI Flange Mountings • Reverse Circulation Port • Solid Cast Construction • Leak Free Sealless Design |
• Dual Containment Motor • Temperature Range -42° to 75°C • 4 Pump Models in Design 10 GPM @ 100 & 200 PSI 20 GPM @ 100 & 200 PSI |
Additionally, the hermetically sealed seal-less canned HP series pumps from MTH can safely handle other toxic refrigerants, including CO2, in smaller point-of-service refrigeration systems. Even for simpler water/glycol systems in refrigerated cases, MTH's high-pressure regenerative turbines, available in either mechanical seal or seal-less configurations, offer the perfect solution for overcoming friction resistance in lengthy heat exchanger piping runs.
